During the Covid-19 lockdown, many musicians were trying to figure out a way to play music with others without being in the same space. I, too, became interested in finding out if the technology was available for such a thing, so in early 2021, I began doing my own research. Once I heard the album Some Kind of Tomorrow by Jane Ira Bloom and Mark Helias, I knew it was possible. For this recording of freely improvised jazz, Bloom was in NYC while Helias was some 90 miles away in upstate New York. My colleague, free jazz virtuoso Hans Sturm and I experimented with several apps including JamKazam, Listen To, and Jamulus, before settling on Soundjack. After a couple of test runs, we recorded five improvisations on March 27, 2021, with Hans at his home and me at my office. There was no discussion of what we were going to play before each improvisation. The latency inherent in the Internet hookup was enough of an issue that it was difficult if not impossible to play in time, so we largely discarded the notion. After the recording, I put it away, thinking it was a fun little project and nothing more. In the summer of 2022, I got it out and realized we had something that, if nothing else, documented a time when musicians all over the world were struggling to do what they loved most - making music with others. With Remote Possibilities, we present our five improvisations in the order they were recorded. (I split two of them up and added some midi embellishments, creating seven pieces for the album.) Enjoy! - Tom Larson
